Sun 10th Aug – Work in the Peruvian city of Ica

Work in the Peruvian city of Ica On 15 August 2007, the Peruvian city of Ica – in the coastal desert around 165 miles south of Lima – was badly damaged by an earthquake. In the aftermath of that day, the Anglican Diocese of Peru began to work in Ica, as a visible presence helping rebuild destroyed communities. Today, the work in Ica focuses especially on children and young people in poor areas. The ministry which began in Ica has grown to cover the new Central South Region of the diocese, which incorporates the former capital of Jauja, the industrial city of Huancayo, the one-time stronghold of the Shining Path terrorists in Ayacucho, and Huancavelica, one of South America’s poorest cities. By road, the journey from one end of the Central South Region to the other takes a full day on dangerous roads high in the Andes. Mike Chapman, Suffragan Bishop of Peru, oversees the church’s ministry in this area, working with several clergy (many new to the Anglican priesthood) and in collaboration with the micro-finance organisation ECLOF. Bishop Mike and his wife Linda will be visiting the Diocese of Worcester in September. Please pray for the work of the Diocese of Peru in Ica and God’s mission throughout our partner diocese. Rural Dean: Paul Harrison Lay Chair: John Nicholson Diocese of Bristol: Bishop Mike Hill with Bishop Lee Rayfield (Swindon) Diocese of Helsinki (Finland): Bishop Irja Askola The Church of the Province of South East Asia: Archbishop Bolly Lapok
