New Peruvian Bishops

In July 2015, three Peruvian
priests were consecrated as
suffragan bishops in the Anglican
Diocese of Peru. With the
retirement of Bishop Bill Godfrey
in April this year, Jorge Aguilar was
installed to replace him as Bishop
of Peru, marking the first time in
its history that Peru has had an
indigenous diocesan bishop. The
Diocese is now divided into five areas of work, three of which are the responsibility of
the new bishops, and two of which are led by ‘regional vicars’.

In addition to leading the Diocese, Bishop Jorge has particular responsibility for the
Lima area and the coast south to Ica.

Bishop Alejandro Mesco trained at an evangelical seminary prior to ordination as an
Anglican priest. A native Quechua speaker, he has previously worked in Arequipa and
the Colca Canyon, and as suffragan his work will now focus on the Cusco region in the
south-eastern Andes.

Bishop Juan Carlos Revilla was a Roman Catholic seminarian before being ordained
as an Anglican. His ministry has mainly been in Arequipa, where for many years he
was parish priest of Cristo Redentor. His now has responsibility for the Chiclayo and
Cajamarca regions in northern Peru.

Carlos Quispe is the new regional vicar of the Arequipa region, in the south. A former
Roman Catholic priest, he has previously undertaken several roles in Lima and Huancayo.

Misael Varillas takes over as regional vicar of Huancayo, in the central Andes to the east
of Lima. Trained at an evangelical seminary, he has worked in parishes in Lima and Ica.

Please pray for all of the Bishops in Peru as well as for Margaret Rutter, former Mission
Development Officer, who is visiting Peru this September in support of our links.
