The Institute of Historic Building Conservation
(the IHBC) is the UK’s professional body
for historic environment conservation
specialists. IHBC members work in areas
that help secure the conservation of historic
places, buildings and sites.
The annual IHBC Annual School this year is being held in Worcester from 21 – 25
June. The title of the conference is ‘People Power – Catalyst for Change’ and how
communities are integral to the conservation and regeneration of historic places.
Andrew Mottram, Diocesan Historic Buildings and Community Development Officer, has
chaired the committee preparing this event. He says: “Conservation is the management
of change, which is a quite different approach from that of preservation or restoration.
Worcester is a great venue for the IHBC Annual School. Issues of conservation are
continually addressed by those responsible for the Cathedral site and alongside the
range of historic buildings and sites, there are impressive examples of contemporary
buildings in historic settings such as The Hive and the King’s School boathouse.”
“For too long there has been a certain mystique generated by the conservation sector
and a holding on to knowledge and skills rather than enabling people to experience
and learn, increasing capacity in local communities to get on with looking after their
heritage. The IHBC Annual School will explore how professionals, clients, stakeholders
and communities can work together to make a real difference for heritage.”
On Thursday evening there will be a reception held at The Old Palace with Bishop John
as the keynote speaker.
Pray for all of those coming to Worcester for the IHBC Annual Summer School and
particularly for Andrew as he leads the event.
