Researching World War 1 Soldiers

Barbara Price, member of All Saints, Sedgley has spent
hours cataloguing and researching 294 soldiers from
the local area who died in the First World War. She
now has individual profiles all of the men who died and
has visited many of the graves in England, France and
Belgium. Her profiles have been bound into a book to be
held at All Saints’ Church.

Barbara said: “I began researching my Great Uncle and
discovered that his cousin was also on the All Saints’
memorial. From there I widened my research to cover all
the names listed at All Saints and then other churches
asked me to help research the names on their memorials!”

On a visit to Lichfield Cathedral, Barbara found names
of all the soldiers in the Staffordshire Regiment who
lived locally, some of whom weren’t remembered on
any other memorial. “Altogether I discovered that 294
soldiers died and 442 returned from the First World
War,” continued Barbara. “It really brought home the
impact that the war had on the local community.”

She recorded information on each individual using material from the Commonwealth
War Graves Commission, census records and family history websites. Where possible
photographs of the soldiers or of their graves/ memorials have been added. “My
husband and I have visited 106 different cemeteries and managed to photograph
256 graves,” said Barbara. “It’s been a tremendous experience and has had a real
emotional impact on us. It’s important to us that this research is shared with others.”

Please pray for All Saints Sedgley as Barbara’s archive of the family history of all the
men who died in WW1 from Sedgley is dedicated. Pray also for St Peter’s, Upper Gornal
who are leading an outdoor service commemorating the end of WW1 at the memorial
stone and a ‘There not there’ figure in the precinct opposite the church.
