Last Friday was Bishop Peter Selby’s 50th anniversary
of being ordained to the Priesthood. He will celebrate
today with family and friends with a special service in
London. He said:
“I’m very grateful that the Diocese of Worcester, where
I spent a fifth of my five decades of priestly ministry will
join with me in giving thanks today. As you might expect
my mind is travelling over all the different places where
it’s been my privilege to minister, and ministry shared
and friendships made in the ten Worcester years are a
special part of that.
“Some of that ministry has been very public, but what is most in my mind are the way
in which the privilege of presiding at the Eucharist and of the ministry of preaching has
described the meaning of that public role. I’m aware too of the much more private
sharing in pastoral ministry and the trust so generously given.
“Above all, though, it’s a time to recall how much I’ve received, how much I’ve been
allowed to learn through the fellowship I’ve shared with others in the church. It is a
source of great gratitude that I’m still allowed to exercise ministry where Jan and I now
worship, and at the same time, through this prayer diary, to be joined to the continuing
work of the gospel in Worcester.
“God bless you all, and thank you.”
Bishop Peter was Bishop of Worcester from 1997 to 2007.
