Well-dressing in Malvern

Beneath the town of Malvern lies underground water which
surfaces in many places across the Malvern
Hills, and throughout the area, in the form
of springs and wells. Some of these are still
flowing and people visit them regularly to collect
pure water to drink. Others, sadly, have fallen
into disrepair and the water is undrinkable.
Some sites, such as Hayslad, on the western
slopes of the Malvern Hills, are very large and
spacious while others are small and secluded,
situated high up on the hills.

Many of the wells and springs have historic origins; Eye Well was believed to have healing
properties, and the monks who settled in Malvern visited this well to seek healing from
eye infections and conditions. St Anne’s Well was one of the recommended places
for Victorians to visit to drink the water to cure their maladies, often caused by an
unhealthy diet and inactivity.

In May, around 50 of the wells are decorated by groups from Malvern, and at All Souls’
tide one well is chosen to be dressed. In October, Hayslad will be decorated with natural
materials, branches, ribbons and paper leaves. The decoration will remain for a week
and people are invited to add their own messages in memory of those they love.

The decoration is much appreciated by many of the people who visit the well to collect
water for their domestic use and, most years, around 100 messages are added to the
branches. A dedication ceremony is held by a local minister on All Souls’ morning, 2
November, celebrating the lives of all those commemorated and giving thanks for pure
water, so essential to life. The leaves and ribbons are later ceremonially burned as a
symbol of memories being taken up into eternity.

Please pray for all those who live in and around the Malvern Hills and for those who
visit the wells and springs to pray.
