Katie Fisher has recently been appointed as
Chaplain to Dyson Perrins CE Academy and
Community Youth Worker. Her role involves
supporting students, parents, Governors and
staff at the school and working alongside local
churches and the YMCA to reach out to young
people in the Malvern area.
“The Head at Dyson Perrins is keen to have a
school that’s not just Christian in name, but
has a Christian ethos which is distinctive and
recognisable to parents,” says Katie. “My two-year appointment is funded by the school
along with a partnership of the local churches and the Urban Churches’ Trust Fund.”
In school, Katie will be taking assemblies and supporting the Religious Studies
department as well as providing mentoring and 1-2-1 support for more vulnerable
students. She also hosts a weekly chapel service and helps run the Christian Union.
“I have now taught every year group to try to get to know the students and I’ve organised
a ‘retreat day’ for Year 10, using the diocesan ‘Breathe’ resource as part of a carousel
of activities. I’d also like to run residential retreats as well as providing practical and
emotional support for those taking exams. The response from both the students and
the staff has been very positive so far!”
Out of school, Katie is getting to know the different opportunities available for young
people. “I want to support what’s already happening before looking at what else can
be started, as well as get to know the local church youth workers. I’m really keen to
work with all the churches and build links with the churches and the school – perhaps
using the skills of some of the church members to help the young people – eg through
gardening, knitting or baking.”
Pray for Katie and for all those she will support and work alongside.
