Every Palm Sunday, the Anglican churches of west Worcester come together
for their annual Palm Sunday procession behind Pumpkin the donkey.
The Revd Chris Stuart writes: “The service begins with the Liturgy of the Palms in St
Clement’s Church, and then the procession moves off to wend its way right through the
heart of St John’s, up to St John’s church where the service resumes with the Liturgy of
the Passion. Pumpkin normally comes in to the church for a blessing (and, occasionally,
to join in with the singing)!
“The procession makes for quite a spectacle for local residents and visitors; more
importantly, it’s a reminder that for us as Christians this is one of the most holy days
in the year. We normally process in silence, and having Pumpkin to help with the
procession adds a really powerful visual dimension to the service: He’s a reminder both
of the beauty of so much of God’s creation, but also of the humility with which Christ
made his way to the cross.”
Please pray for all Palm Sunday services taking place today, that they may enable our
churches to begin to tell the Easter story in their communities.
