Easter Gardens

“We used to have quite a small Easter garden in one of the transepts,” says Michael
Brierley, the cathedral precentor.

“But it seemed a bit out of the way and a missed opportunity. So we’ve started creating
it right in the middle of the building, on the quire steps, so that you can’t miss it. Our
service team lays down plastic sheeting, the stonemasons construct the tomb, local
garden centres kindly donate plants, our flower-arrangers decorate it with flowers on
Holy Saturday ready for the joy of the resurrection, and to visitors’ amusement, the
vergers water the turf during Easter week to keep it going.

It’s a fantastic visual focus, and the Easter message, explained on a board nearby,
touches people’s hearts.”

Please pray for all churches creating Easter gardens in their buildings or
churchyards this weekend, that those who see them might be flled with the
joy and hope of the risen Christ.
