Two people will be
admitted to the office
of Reader next Saturday
in the Cathedral. Bishop
John will conduct the
service, licensing the
individuals to minister in
the parishes they have
been called to serve.
Readers are trained and licensed lay ministers in the Church of England, authorised in
particular to exercise a ministry of preaching and teaching. They undergo a two year
training course before being admitted to the role, after which they carry out a wide
range of tasks within their parishes and beyond, especially helping others to reflect on
their faith and how it relates to their daily lives.
Being licensed are:
• Andy Green from St Egwin, Norton and Lenchwick, which is in a combined benefice
with All Saints, Evesham and Chaplain to Evesham and Pershore Hospitals.
• Andy Hewines from Blakedown with Churchill and Broome.
This year’s service will also mark the 150th anniversary of Reader ministry. Existing
Readers will be present to renew their promises alongside the newly licenced and it will
be a celebration of the Ministry of the Word.
Dr Christina Baxter will preach at the service. Dr Baxter is a former lay Chair of General
Synod, the former Principal of St John’s College, Nottingham and is also a Reader
herself. The service will start at 2.30pm in the Cathedral and all are welcome.
Please pray for Andy and Andy as they are licensed as Readers, for those involved in
the service and for all of our Readers across the Diocese.
