Candlemas

Today, the season of Epiphany ends with the Feast of the Presentation.

On this day, Jesus was taken to the temple by his parents, according to the law of Israel. There, he was recognised by Simeon, who declared him to be ‘a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of God’s people Israel.’ The traditional service for this feast includes a procession of candles, and so it is often known as Candlemas.

Historically, on Candlemas night, many people placed lighted candles in their windows at home as a symbol of Jesus as light of the world. In ancient, pre-Christian times, this date also marked the festival of light; the mid-point of winter, half way between the winter solstice (shortest day) and the spring equinox.

Lord, the light of your love
is shining
In the midst of the darkness,
shining
Jesus, Light of the world
shine upon us.
